Burberry Pink Taupe eyeshadow quad review and swatches

Burberry is famous for their fashion, but also their luxurious high end make up line. Their single shadows, especially Pale Barley, has won over the hearts of many bloggers thanks to its wearable everyday color and great formula. Today's palette has a close dupe for Pale Barley, which might interest you if you prefer quads over singles as I do. A quad also has double the amount of product but is less than double the price compared to two single shadows. It's still definitely a splurge 53€ for 5.4g/0.19oz. Fortunately the Burberry website does offer free international shipping which I love. If something is out of stock on the official website, you can usually find it at Net-a-Porter.

Burberry Pink Taupe quad and make up flatlay

Burberry Pink Taupe packaging

The quad comes in a sturdy metallic compact with the classic Burberry check pattern faintly printed on the cover. It has some nice weight to it and there are no unnecessary applicators taking space. There's nothing wrong if you like to use those tiny sponges or brushes, but personally I prefer a more compact case.

Burberry Pink Taupe Quad

Colors

The eyeshadows are arranged diagonally and debossed with the similar check pattern, which is a very nice, luxurious touch. I don't mind 'ruining' the pattern as I use the palette, I'm thinking it's just a way of showing 'love' to the product. Burberry's choice of colors is always wearable, chic and elegant, definitely inspired by their fashion. The placement for the shadows is usually from lightest to darkest shade, medium shades having the most space. This makes sense to me, but the light cool-toned brown is such a gorgeous shade for softer, everyday wearable looks I'd like to dip my whole face in it. No wonder Pale Barley single is popular, as they look very similar. I'll do a comparison post once I have both.

Burberry Pink Taupe Quad Swatches

Swatches

- a pale greyish taupe with a satin finish
- muted, khaki grey with a satin finish
- subdued matte rose pink with grey and plum undertones
- a rich, dark chocolate shade with a matte finish

FORMULA

It's ah-mazing. I don't say this lightly when it comes to eyeshadows, as I've been spoiled with great formulations (Viseart, SUQQU, Rouge Bunny Rouge..). But Burberry's is among the best - even the notoriously hard to formulate dark mattes. In pink taupe there's a gorgeous combination of mattes and semi-mattes with a lovely, subtle satin sheen. I'd call the texture soft, but not buttery. The colors have a nice amount of pigment: they aren't in-your-face intensive, but build up nicely and softly. The shadows adhere well to the lids without patchiness or skipping, wearing beautifully without showing fading during the day. However, I do always recommend using an eyeshadow primer if you wear eyeshadow +8 hours and your lids are hooded like mine are.

Burberry Pink Taupe quad motd

Make up of today

I tried a little stronger motd for Pink Taupe: with the khaki all over the lid and lots of matte brown in the outer corner. Other make up worn: Rouge Bunny Rouge lipstick in Musings, Dior sculpt blush in 03, Addiction Skincare Foundation, Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage concealer

Burberry Pink Taupe quad motd

Overall

With well coordinated colors and this beautiful formulation, it's hard to go wrong with Burberry. Pink Taupe is among my favorite palettes thanks to the unique, subtle and elegant choice of colors, but so far none of Burberry palettes has let me down. They have a decent selection of colors for various eye/skin colors, and I can highly recommend picking up a quad according to your own taste.

Have you tried any of the Burberry eyeshadows? Are you intrigued to?

Chemical exfoliating 101

$
0
0

When I'm preparing my skincare posts, I want to provide an enjoyable read for both beginners and HC skincare enthusiasts. Some of these pieces of information seem so mundane and general knowledge to me I wonder if sharing them again is worth it? After having multiple chats with my friends, only a few had heard of chemical exfoliants. I think they're unsung heroes of skincare, especially where I live the importance of chemical exfoliating isn't loudly hyped up. Personally I love chemical exfoliants, I think every one should know how to use - or in some cases avoid them!  (PS. never put lemon on your face, they're just for decorative purposes)

Why should one exfoliate?

The uppermost layer of our skin consists of dead skin cells with a cell turnover of ~28 days, which slows down as we age. A packed layer of these dead skin cells can make our skin appear appear dull, uneven texture or congested. Most common form of acne is caused as a hair follicle gets clogged by excess dead skin cells and sebum. Exfoliating gets rid of the dead, old skin cells revealing younger, plumper skin underneath. It helps to brighten our skin, safely get rid of pigmentation or scaring over time, help with texture issues and even acne and blackheads. After exfoliation other skincare products will also penetrate better, making them more efficient.

Chemical exfoliation or scrubs

Scrubs are lotions, gels, etc. which contain small grains of salt, sugar, coffee, oats, powders and unfortunately in some cases microbeads, which pollute our environment. Scrubs can also be washing cloths, dry brushes and gloves, basically any mechanical/physical exfoliator. I find them especially beneficial for my body skin like elbows, knees, legs or anywhere I can use more abrasive exfoliating. The problem with facial scrubs is you can make micro cuts on your face, which can damage your skin, cause redness or sensitivity.  I almost never use mechanical exfoliators on my face, except for my favorite Cure Natural Aqua Gel, which is a very delicate scrub.

Chemical exfoliators are mild chemical peels that come in two general types: AHA and BHA with various strengths. Not to be confused with putting battery acid on your face, chemical exfoliators can be even gentler than traditional scrubs. Most of chemical exfoliants are toners or lotions you apply on a clean face and don't wash off. This is an effective and safe way to mildly exfoliate your skin many times a week (instead of scrubbing 1-2 times/week), treat acne, congestion and texture issues. A mild strength chemical exfoliator can be well-suited for even sensitive skin types.

Chemical exfoliants 101

What are the differences between BHA and AHA?

AHA and BHA have a lot in common regarding smoothing or evening out your skin, but there are some unique qualities that benefit different skin concerns. Please notice AHA and BHA strengths don't go hand in hand and the you should start from a lower dosage (<1% BHA or <8% AHA) – especially if you're sensitive. Experimenting will show what works the best for you and how often you should apply: from 2 times a day – every other day, for example. Like with all skincare, please use a common sense, patch test and step away if you're irritated. Your skin shouldn't peel or burn.

AHA is short for alpha hydroxy acid, such as glycolic acid (from sugar cane), lactic acid (from milk) and mandelic acid (from almonds). Sometimes called 'fruit acids', as most commonly they can be deprived from foods, such as fruits. AHAs help getting rid of dead skin cells by loosening up glue-like lipids between the cells, revealing reveal brighter and healthier skin underneath. Shedding the dead skin cells can treat hyperpigmentation effectively. They can also plump the skin and help with wrinkling, as all AHAs have some humectant properties. AHAs do increase photosensitivity, so always use a stable sunscreen during the day!

BHA is short for beta hydroxy acid aka salicylic acid is known acne treatment, as it can penetrate deeper in to pores and get rid of the gunk inside a pore. If you have blackheads, acne or clogged pores is BHA potentially your best friend. BHA can be drying and is often a good choice for combo or oily skin. Personally I have dry and acne prone skin, and I haven't had any problems using BHA. Salicylic acid is derived from salicin and not recommended if you have an aspirin allergy.

Chemical exfoliants 101

Recap

- AHA is great for: loss of firmness, signs of ageing, treating pigmentation such as scars or sun spots, texture issues, dry skin. Causes sun sensitivity.
- BHA is great for: blackheads, clogged and enlarged pores, oily skin, bumps under skin

pH and concentration

The concern with picking a hydroxy acid product is pH. Too high pH and the acid won't penetrate the skin, too low and you have the risk of irritation. Usually in commercial products, the problem is the former. Also, there's the issue of concentration of acid in the product. In proper chemical exfoliants, the concentration and pH should be listed on the packaging or manufacturer's website. As I said above, you want to start from milder and work your way up, but here's an example what the pH and effective concentration for a leave-on chemical exfoliant should be:

- AHA: pH less than 4, concentration 4-10%
- BHA: pH less than 3.5, concentration 1-2%

Acids in a skincare routine

On Accutane, I don't use any chemical exfoliants to avoid irritation and peeling, but normally my routine would go something like this: I rarely use a traditional toner so I apply AHA/BHA or combo of both after cleansing, both AM and PM. If I'm using combination of both, I'll apply BHA first - assuming it's lower pH (as it should). If I'm using a Vitamin C serum like LAA, I'll apply a pH adjusting toner after cleansing, then the Vitamin C with ~15 wait time to let the product absorb, then acid(s), hydrating essences, toners and so on from water soluble to oil soluble. Recap:

Cleanse (single/double) > pH adjust > LAA Vit C + wait time > BHA > AHA > rest of routine

Use what works for you

As I said, experiment and chose your exfoliant according to your own skin concerns. I'll save the differences between types AHAs and product recommendations for a future post. I hope this introduction post was helpful and gave you more insight about chemical exfoliants and what wonderful benefits they can have for your skin!

Have you tried chemical exfoliants? Please leave me a comment if these type of basic 101 posts are helpful or should I get into product recommendations and particulars right away.

FANCL vs DHC cleansing oils

$
0
0

FANCL and DHC are both popular Japanese cosmetic brands with very skin health focused vision, minimal packaging and the best selling cleansing oils in Japan. Both FANCL and DHC also produce Vitamins and supplements for various health concerns, diet, detox etc. Today I'm doing a comparison post of these two cleansing oils, in the same manner I did my Heimish vs Banila co. cleansing balm review. Without testing yourself it's difficult to choose one over the other, especially if you're shopping online, and I hope this post will aid you in deciding which one you'd like to pick up.

DHC and FANCL cleansing oils

FANCL Mild Cleansing Oil

FANCL is advertises its skincare being preservative free and suitable sensitive skin types. These are marketing claims to me (usually all skincare is somehow preserved), but it gives you and idea of the brand philosophy. The packaging is very clean, minimal and fuss free. The usual packaging is plain blue, but in the 1st picture you can see a limited edition(?) artwork version. FANCL does no test on animals, but is sold in China where animal testing is required by law. FANCL Mild Cleansing Oil retails for 120ml/¥1,836

FANCL Mild Cleansing Oil

FANCL Mild Cleansing Oil Ingredients

Cetearyloctanoate, Butylene Glycol Diisononanoate, Polyglyceryl-10 diisostearate, Octanoic acid, Polyglyceryl-20 Octaisononanoate, Diphenylsiloxy Phenyl Trimethicone, Polyglyceryl-20 Hexacaprylate, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Dimethicone, Behenic acid, Phytosteryl / isostearyl / cetyl / stearyl / behenyl, Tocopherols (Vitamin E), Stearoyl Inulin, Dextrin palmitate

Most of these ingredients were unfamiliar to me and I couldn't find an official English translation, so here's what's listed on FANCL website and I translated with the help of COSDNA. Fortunately, FANCL decodes the ingredient list on their own website: The Mild Cleansing Oil consists mostly of emollients and emulsifiers with only two mildly potential irritants according to COSDNA. I very much liked FANCL, the only thing that annoyed me was it ran out quickly (120ml) and I wish they sold this in a larger bottle instead of double pack.

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

DHC (Daigaku Honyaku Center) bases its philosophy around the health benefits of virgin olive oil. Their cleansing and facial oil both are olive oil based. If you know you're sensitive to certain oil, such as olive, choose according to your needs. In the pictures I have their limited edition Alice in Wonderland packaging, otherwise the packaging is clear, plain plastic bottle. DHC also does not test on animals, but they do sell their products in China. Their cleansing oil retails for ¥1,486/120ml or ¥3,000/300ml (various sizes available).

DHC Cleansing Oil Alice in Wonderland packaging

DHC DEEP CLEANSING OIL Ingredients

Olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, caprylic/capric triglyceride, sorbeth-30 tetraoleate, pentylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, tocopherol, stearyl glycyrrhetinate, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf oil

Although there's no 'fragrance' listed, but caprylic/capric triglyceride is a perfuming (and skin conditioning) ingredient quite high up in the INCI. Compared to the FANCL, DHC has a slight clean scent to it, but nothing overpowering. DHC also uses a preservative, phenoxyethanol, if using a preservative is a concern to you. Otherwise the ingredients are a couple of plant extracts, emulsifier and moisturiser. On COSDNA, DHC has a low amount of irritants or potenttial acne causing ingredients: the same vitamin E FANCL uses and DHC signature olive oil. Personally I don't find any of the ingredients irritating me and I can well use it around my eyes to remove any mascara and other make up.

DHC Cleansing Oil

User experience

Although oils remove make up, alone they aren't cleansing enough. That's why in most cleansing oils there's an emulsifying agent and both FANCL and DHC perform it nicely. First, massage the oil into your face with dry hands, then wet the hands lightly and massage again, letting the emulsified cleanser do it's job. There's no foaming, just a slight milky texture. Both FANCL and DHC remove any dirt, hard to remove make up and sunscreen from my face. I don't use waterproof mascara, but I believe you could use these cleansing oils to gently remove any waterproof make up as well. They rinse clean without leaving any residue or film on my skin. Best of all, my dry skin doesn't feel tight when I go to my second cleanse.

Overall

I've tried many cleansing oils from Korean drugstore brands to Japanese high-end THREE or Shu Uemura, but nothing so far has beaten FANCL and DHC. Oddly, I was sure I'd find a winner taking a look at the ingredient lists, but as I'm no chemist I couldn't find a faulty or advantage in favour of one over the other. I think they're both excellent and inexpensive cleansers and you'd be happy with either of them. Choose FANCL over DHC if you're very very sensitive or can't tolerate/enjoy olive oil, otherwise I'd go for which ever is easiest to access with a decent price. Next time in Japan I'll be buying both.

What's your current favorite cleansing oil?

SUQQU EX-35 Yuki tsubaki

Today I'm delighted to share with you SUQQU UK exclusive Xmas collection palette EX-35 Yuki tsubaki, designed by SUQQU Senior Make Up Artist Jorge Balzaretti. The collection celebrates SUQQU's 10th UK anniversary and includes two limited edition eyeshadow palettes, two eyeliner liquid pen duos (black/brown and black/burgundy) and three Creamy Glow Moist lipsticks (true red, cool pinkish red and universal nude). The palette is made in Japan and retails £45.00 for 4.6g/0.16oz. Launching 6th of October 2016 - mark your calendars!

About the Artist

I had the great opportunity to chat a bit with Jorge, he kindly answered all my questions despite his hectic schedule. He's very smart, sweet and funny in his messages. When I asked what he loves the most about working with SUQQU, he gave the answer SUQQU runs in his blood - despite thinking it would sound corny. Before working for SUQQU, Jorge was already in love with Japan, so translating his inspiration for something real and material in the essence of Japan is a dream job to him. The brand philosophy is so on par with his own vision: taking care of skin prior of doing anything, SUQQU's great quality in cosmetics and being chic, elegant, sexy and niche. If you take a look at Jorge's Instagram, you can see this all these elements translated into pictures with immense talent.

SUQQU Bend Color Eyeshadow EX-35 Yukitsubaki

Palette inspiration

Yuki tsubaki translates as Winter Camellia, a flower that blooms even in harsh winter weather. Jorge let me know they were expecting these palettes to be released in Summer 2017, but thanks to the team work of UK and Japan they managed to make it happen for Xmas 2016 - amazing taking into consideration that product development takes at least 24 months for the product to be out on the market. Originally inspired by Japanese summer flowers, Jorge and his colleagues worked very hard to find flowers matching to the initial inspiration. In Japan, camellias often bloom in early Winter and Jorge loved the idea – as it's different and out of ordinary.

Personally to me, I think Yuki tsubaki is more than fitting for the palette and it feels nostalgic to me. When I lived in Tokyo, there used to be deep pink camellias right beside my front door and on the route I cycled to my University. Camellias remind me of the crisp Winter weather, cycling and fulfilling dreams as it was my long-time dream to move to Japan. I think SUQQU team found a beautiful poetic way to capture this palette, combining both strength and beauty.

SUQQU Blend Color Eyeshadow EX-35 Yukitsubaki

Yuki Tsubaki EX-35 colors

Although SUQQU is well known for it's complex shimmers, but Jorge's main priorities for the two Xmas LE palettes were mattes. This year's palettes have been shimmer and shine heavy, like EX-29 Koukiori I reviewed here, and according to Jorge there's more to come. UK consumers tend to go more for mattes than shimmers, and working at the stores for events gave Jorge the chance to listen real customers and their needs and wishes. 3/4 of Yuki Tsubaki shadows are matte: only the upper left pale pink champagne shade has visible shimmers. The pale champagne pink isn't the most complex shimmer shade from SUQQU, but makes a nice color topper.

Formula

I had some trouble with the dark brown matte shade of EX-32 Rengazome (reviewed here), but EX-32 Yuki Tsubaki performs excellent. The texture is a bit hard, but they apply without being patchy or skipping on the eyelid. When it comes to the application of this palette, I tried placing the pink all over the mobile lid, blending with the brown to create a dark crease. I wasn't really feeling that look and ended up removing my eye make up. I found applying soft layers of eyeshadow and building the look much more suitable for this formula than heavy packing and vigorous blending. The pigmentation is sheer-medium, but the color choices pack a punch with a beautiful contrasting.

SUQQU EX-35 Yukitsubaki swatches

Swatches

- pale pink-white with a cool undertone
- satin/matte pink red with a strawberry hue
- pale pinky champagne shimmer
- rich neutral dark chocolate brown

SUQQU EX-35 Yukitsubaki swatches

The 2nd swatch picture was taken in more prominent sunlight. The colors layer incredibly beautifully, I'm so smitten with all the combinations:
- Pink + red combines as a pale baby pink
- Red + brown creates a rich reddish warm brown
- Red shade layered with shimmer emphasises its coolness and makes the color "pop"
- Finally layering the brown with red and shimmer shade creates a gorgeous purple - almost eggplant taupe brown.

SUQQU EX-35 Yukitsubaki MOTD

1st look using SUQQU EX-35 Yuki tsubaki

In this very pink look I'm wearing Suqqu Extra Rich Cream Foundation in 102 (review), THREE lip gloss 15 Dreamers awaken and Addiction liquid blush in Sensually. Brows Viseart Sructure palette mixing some of the more dark and ashy shades. I love wearing pink eye make up when it's this sophisticated, and the pink shade in EX-35 Yuki tsubaki doesn't make my eyes look eyes blood shot.

SUQQU EX-35 Yukitsubaki MOTD

2nd look using SUQQU EX-35 Yuki tsubaki

2nd look is a pale pink as a base, deep brown layered in the crease with the pink shade - see below how it transforms almost into an eggplant shade. I have the shimmer and pink shade lightly layered on the mobile lid, no eyeliner. My lipstick is Rouge Bunny Rouge Word of Mouth, blush THREE 11 Dream of a Day, SUQQU Treatment Primer as a base topped with Addiction tinted moisturizer and Armani Fluid Sheer Highlight no.1. Closeup below.

SUQQU EX-35 Yukitsubaki MOTD

Overall

I'm very much in love with this quad, I even dare to say it's one of my favorites. I love it how the colors can be transformed with layering techniques, but there's enough contrast and drama to keep the colors interesting as they are in the pan. Although I mentioned the shimmer lacks certain complexity and the base pink-white shade could be a duped, the palette is beautiful for both subtle and statement looks. Jorge's hard work, talent and passion for make up has transformed into a beautiful quad, and I'm so excited because he has confirmed he's working on future collections for SUQQU. I can't wait to see what Jorge Balzaretti and SUQQU brings us next!

The palette launches on the 6th of October and SUQQU UK is taking reservations via email (suqquuk@eqpuk.com) on the 29th of September.

Depotting Rouge Bunny Rouge eyeshadows tutorial

$

Obligatory disclaimer: to only try at your own risk. Please don't burn yourself or your house. This is not for someone who's not willing to destroy the packaging and take a risk to damage the eyeshadows. Don't breathe the plastic fumes, use a well ventilated space.

My Rouge Bunny Rouge single eyeshadow collection has gotten bigger and bigger during the past year, thanks to many promotions and sales the site has run. I noticed I didn't give all the love I could to my single compact eyeshadows as I did to the refills in my Z-palette, so I researched about depotting eyeshadows in a safe way. The shadows are not cheap and some of them are hard to get, US exclusive, out of stock and whatnot. In the end, I decided to take the risk of damaging my pretties and got to work.

Depotting Rouge Bunny Rouge eyeshadows

Equipment

You'll need: nail or a small sharp object, like a screwdriver. A knife, any knife will do. Pliers (optional), matches and a candle. Some prefer depotting using a flat iron, but since I was afraid of damaging my flat iron and burning myself, so I chose a candle instead (candles don't burn.. right?). And finally, you need single eyeshadows.

Depotting Rouge Bunny Rouge eyeshadows

Removing the sticker

The pan is glued into the compact with a sticker in the bottom. RBR stickers I could removing by scratching the corner with my nail - some came out very nice and easy, but I ripped a couple of them a little bit. You could use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol to help loosening up the glue, but I didn't care as long as most of the stickers were re-usable.

Depotting Rouge Bunny Rouge eyeshadows

Melting the plastic

I lit a small candle and held the shadow with pliers, later learning I could just hold the compact safely from the mirror. After removing the sticker I hold the bottom of the compact on the top of the flame, mainly the centre part. Wait about ~30 seconds, the plastic blackens first and then starts to bubble. Luckily the glue bottom of RBR shadow pans isn't very strong, by heating up the compact you can pop them out.

Depotting Rouge Bunny Rouge eyeshadows

Remove the pan

Take your nail and poke the bottom carefully, holding the compact very near a table/plate. If the pan doesn't move, heat for another 20-30 seconds and repeat. The glue should loosen up and the pan pop out without any strength or effort. With some other brands, you might need to use the knife to pry the pan loose. Safely put the depotted pan on another plate, don't touch the metal as it's very hot. The bottoms of RBR pans are magnetic, so you can now pop them into a Z-palette. You're done!

depotting-eyeshadows.jpg

Possible problems

The only mistake I made was with my Rufous-Tailed Weaver shadow. In this case the glue was strong and I tried to pry the corner with a knife, somehow bending the pan and pressed the shadow until it broke a bit. I managed to salvage most of it and pressing it back to the pan. My perfectionist's heart cries crocodile tears, but oh well.

Another mistake I made was size of the pans. The older(?) ones are 2.4 grams instead of 2g. A small Z-palette holds 9 two gram pans perfectly, but I had a mixture of large and small sizes.

A couple of my pans I ordered from the US website were plastic or some sort of light metal and wouldn't magnetise. Luckily, Z-palettes come with metal disks with stickers, you can adhere them to the pans. The disks are the exact size for smaller RBR shadows!

Depotted eyeshadows

The aftermath

Would I do this again if I purchase more single shadows? Absolutely. I'm not quite ready yet to depot all of my shadows, but I'm really happy with my RBR singles collection and customisable palettes. I ordered a Large Z-palette to hold my RBR shadows and having a ton of fun planing new eye looks and shadow combos. If you want 20% off your Rouge Bunny Rouge purchase use the code RBR-LAURALOUKOLA20 (non-affiliated) for your shopping basket. Three from THREE: Shimmering Lip Jams review and swatches

$

0

In this next instalment of Three from THREE I have their popular Shimmering Lip Jams to show you. Actually, I'm cheating a little and swatching you all the four shades I have. While the rest of the Western world has gone wild about matte liquid lipsticks, I've fallen in love with lip gloss. It's easy, effortless and doesn't emphasise my dry lips as well matte formulations do. THREE is quite famous of their Shimmering Lip Jams, they're among their best sellers and have won awards in various Japanese beauty magazines. Available in 20 colors, one retailing ¥3,000 + tax.

THREE Shimmering Lip Jams

Formula

The formula is a light weight gloss with no stickiness whatsoever, simply lovely on the lips. The gloss won't completely repel your hair from sticking to your lips on a windy day, but if you've tried RMK lip glosses, they're definitely stickier. The finish isn't a gloopy glassy gloss, but more natural healthy, dewy sheen on the lips. When I think of a lip gloss, I think of something sparkly and very sheer, but unlike the name suggests, there's no visible shimmer or glitter particles in the shades that I have. I'd say a generous layer of Shimmering Lip Jam will give a beautiful tint to the lips and you can tell the difference between shades in the range.

The glosses wear nicely on the lips for a couple of hours if you don't eat or drink, but needs to be reapplied during the day - less stick unfortunately often means less lasting power. I don't notice any scent/taste with this glosses, which I like. Like most THREE products, the lip glosses have plenty of organic botanical oils (tea seed, argan, jojoba, evening primrose, rosehip oil, shea butter and beeswax). The feel is lightly moisturising, but not oily, slippery or overly balmy.

THREE Shimmering Lip Jam

Packaging

The glosses come in a square shaped transparent 'tube' with THREE printed on the side. I quite like this shape as it won't roll off the table and the color is easily visible. The applicator is a quite standard doe foot applicator: round edges, long and straight, a bit thickened near the wand. The gloss glides on your lips so easily you could apply with your eyes closed. The packaging isn't re-inventing the wheel, but works. The cap is THREE's signature matte grey.

THREE Shimmering Lip Jam swatches

Swatches

Excuse me for my chapped lips! I applied all glosses two layers for more intense color. The intensity in each one is about the same. I wasn't very precise with my application, but at least you get an idea of the 'jam' texture. You can definitely smoothen out the color for more even finish.

THREE 08 Red Shoe Twist lip swatch

08 Red Shoe Twist

Gorgeous medium, true red shade. One of the best sellers ranked by iVoce magazine, if I recall right. If you love red lipstick but don't want to make a bold statement every time you wear one, this lip gloss is for you. Also gorgeous for topping a lip pencil or a matte lipstick.

THREE 11 Cranberry Crunch lip swatch

11 Cranberry Crunch

My favourite shade. Judging by the tube I expected 11 Cranberry Crunch to be very intense, but after seeing swatches in a Japanese blog I knew I'd have to try it. A juicy, cranberry wine color.

THREE 15 Dreamers Awaken lip swatch

15 Dreamers Awaken

Definitely my most worn shade. Natural cooler pink shade that looks great with any outfit or make up look. In this picture it doesn't look as pigmented as the others, but is a pretty, fresh cool toned pink in real life.

THREE 16 Color of Soul lip swatch

16 Color of Soul

Pretty coral orange with a slightly cool/neutral undertone. The shade isn't too warm to make my teeth look yellow, and compliments very nicely a variety of make up looks without being too in your face.

Overall

After getting just 1 THREE Shimmering Lip Jam I had to ask my friend to purchase me three more, as I loved the formula and color range so much. I can easily justify owning them all, as there's a clear distinguish between the shades. I must admit I haven't tried many high end lip glosses, but I'm very drawn to THREE. I've worn these a lot especially when my lips were dry and chapped. I wish the formula would apply perfectly even with one swipe, but it doesn't take much effort to rub your lips together to get an even finish. In real life it hasn't bothered me, but I notice it looking at the photos.

Have you tried any lip products from THREE?

Addiction Cheek Polish Review

$

Swatching my Addiction by Ayako stash continues! Today I have quite a fun and unique blush product to show you: Addiction Cheek Polishes. They've been out for a while, and at the time I'm typing this there are six shades available on the web shop, but there are descriptions for a total of 10 shades. I'm a little unsure if they've discontinued 4 shades and just forgot to remove their descriptions. Addiction Cheek Polishes retail ¥3,024 (tax included) for 12ml.

Addiction Cheek Polish blushes in Sensually and Revenge

Packaging

Addiction is famous for their nail polishes, and these little bottles look quite similar. They're both square and about the same size, even the Cheek Polish applicator resembles a nail polish brush, as it's has long and stumpy hairs like nail polish brushes are. The bottle is sturdy frosted glass with the Addiction logo.

Addiction Cheek Polish Blush

Formula

The Cheek Polishes are essentially a matte liquid blush - not to be confused with a liquid lipstick or a multistick formulas, as these have a very sheer, buildable consistency. They're smooth and emollient feeling on the skin, and I don't find them drying on my dry skin. The formula has some lavender oil, so if you're sensitive to essential oils better patch test the product first. I like how sheer these blushes are in consistency: they have a nice watercolor effect, a transparent wash of color, which looks very natural and effortless at the same time. I usually reach for these when I want to have color on my face but not look like I'm wearing anything. The lasting power isn't out of this world, and the blush tends to fade naturally during the day after ~6 hours.

Addiction Cheek Polish Blushes

Application

Although the packaging resembles a nail polish, I don't "paint" on my cheeks with the brush, but dab about 3-4 drops of the product on my cheek and blending with a finger or a duo fibre brush. For liquid highlighter, like the Benefit High Beam, I like to blend with my fingers, but the blush is more liquid in consistency and spreads nice and even with a brush. My Sensually blush was a gift with purchase and I haven't needed to purchase a full size as the product is very long lasting - you only need those 3-4 drops for a sheer wash of color.

Swatches

Addiction Cheek Polish in Sensually swatch

Sensually

Sensually is "my cheeks but better" type of muted, rosy pink shade. In the close up of the swatch photo I can detect some very fine micro shimmer, but I've never noticed it on the skin. It looks like a natural satin-matte finish instead of the 'flat' matte kind once applied. I'm loving this shade a lot.

Addiction Cheek Polish in Revenge

Revenge

A gorgeous, true warm red shade. I love the shade, but if I'm not careful in the application and hiding my natural redness, Revenge might get me a 'sunburnt' look on the cheeks. I find the best application to be on the cheekbones instead of apples of the cheeks. The formula is beautiful and I bet Revenge would look gorgeous especially if you have a bit darker skin than I do or less natural redness.

Overall

Addiction Cheek Polishes are a wonderful addition to my blush wardrobe as a light, effortless alternative to cream blushes. The bottle lasts literally forever and hasn't gone bad quickly (my Revenge is +2 years old). I wish the lasting power was better as I tend to wear my make up full 12 hours/day, but I'm definitely looking into more shades.

Are you intrigued to try the Addiction Cheek Polishes? Have you tried any other similar liquid blushes?

Starter's guide to Japanese cosmetics: shopping

$
0
0

Being a beauty nerd, my friends tend to ask me for shopping recommendations when planning their Japan trips. I've repeated myself so many times I thought I'd share the same information with you and depending on your interest, I can make this subject a mini series, such as:

Part one: Shopping cosmetics in Japan (you're here)
Part two: Top beauty items to purchase in Japan
Part three: Brush shopping

LOST IN TRANSLATION

Looking into Japanese cosmetics can be overwhelming for the first timers, even if you can read the language, there is a lot of selection. Not only there are a lot of inexpensive drug store brands, but also very good quality high end ones - and Japan/Asia exclusives or re-formulations from Lancome, Dior, L'oreal etc. Since I've mostly done my shopping in Japan in person, most of this information is useful if you can be there youself or use a personal shopper. Here are some tips what to look for when you're starting to venture into Japanese beauty for the first time. Photos by my lovely friend Liisa, thank you!

Japanese cosmetics shopping in dept. stores

Check out recommendations

Japan has a vast make up and skincare database site called Cosme, which has constantly updating rankings what are the best or most wanted items in Japanese beauty. It also has lots of user reviews - if you can't read or use Google translate you can still look at the star rankings to determine if the product is decent. Like at the Makeupalley, there are different categories in skincare and make up. Cosme's bi-annual awards are also very famous and the most popular products will promote themselves in stores with ranking stickers, look for those! There's also a couple of physical Cosme stores where you can buy best ranked cosmetics. Other rankings include magazines, such as iVoce, Biteki and Maquia, which you can check out for other popular or novelty items.

SHOPS TO CHECK OUT

If loud and cramped drug stores intimidate you, one way to check out both drugstore, natural and midrange cosmetics is to check out Tokyu Hands or LoFt. They're both home goods department stores/store chains that have nice cosmetics selection, the stores are less cramped with helpful and knowledgeable staff. The testers are usually in a good shape. Great for unique finds and exploring beauty gadgets as well. The prices might have a little mark up, but not necessarily a lot. In some Loft stores you can also find fude (=brushes), such as Koyudo.

If you're more price savvy and don't care about noisy, cramped environment drug stores or Don Quijote (pronounced 'Donki' or 'Donki Hoote' in Japanese) are a your choice. Donki is especially great for buying fake eyelashes and nail stickers. Drugstores, such as Matsumoto Kiyoshi, can be found everywhere.

For your high end make up I love Isetan Mirror. It's a beauty store that stocks both selected Western and Japanese high end brands (Addiction, Shu Uemura, RMK, THREE etc). Although I like department stores, they can also be cramped and it's harder to compare products or prices between counters. I often like to browse a bit of everything and cherry pick my products. In Isetan Mirror you can shop freely, the staff is very nice and give you recommendations from different brands.

Matsumoto Kiyoshi drugstore in Japan

Fukubukuro, presents and specials

Japan loves exclusives and limited editions. Just like in Western make up, high end brands come out with seasonal collections which are available as long as there are stock or a new collection launches. Sometimes special items, gifts with purchase or sets are available only at a certain department store, city or at the flagship shop, for example. My best advice is: if you find something you like a lot, buy it right away. At a different counter your favorite popular item can be sold out.

Fukubukuro means a "lucky bag" when brands sell packages of special or past season items with a heavily discounted price. The trick is, you don't know what the bag keeps inside. Some brands let you know partially what you're getting, for example when I was shopping for Shu Uemura with my Mom, you were able to choose the cleansing oil according to your skin type, but the shades of color make up inside the bag were a mystery. Fukubukuros are sold every New Year from 1st to 3rd January (some drug store brands might be sold in advance). Most popular items tend to sell out on Jan 1st, be prepared for crowds and queueing.

Samples

Gifts with purchase aren't usually over the top, but sometimes when you spend a certain amount you may get a product mini or a cosmetic pouch free of charge. You can request a sample of a foundation, but instead of getting a mini pot with your matching shade you might be handed a sachet and a pamphlet. Unfortunately the sachets often come only in one shade, which is the most popular or a medium one. If you want to match and wear your shade for the whole day it's a good idea to head to the counter in the morning without make up.

Make up display at Ladurée

Shopping etiquette in Dept. stores

When you approach a busy counter, you might be handed a waiting number. Play with samples and wait until your number is called (or keep the number visible). Sales associates might not speak English, so please be positive and patient if you don't speak Japanese. In bigger dept. stores you might be able to ask for English or Chinese assistance. The SAs are often very willing to apply the products on you, which is great if you want to test out a blush, a lipstick or match a foundation before purchasing. Sit on a chair at the testing area and place your bag and coat into a basket provided. Test the items you like, and don't be afraid to ask for a different color or product.

Some department stores give 5~10% discount coupon to tourists, so ask about it before paying. Once you're ready to purchase they often hand you a little tray for credit card or cash. Often the cosmetic counters don't have their own register, you need to wait for a moment as the SA goes to other side of the hall. When you're handed your make up products they check and show you there's no mistaken colors or damaged items. This is to avoid complaints. If you don't want your products be opened, please inform them.

Notice the tax might be added to the price at the time of payment, often the prices listed on the counter/packaging/shelf are tax free. If you purchase tax free, you need to take the purchased items, passport and receipts to a different counter (often in downstairs). This is not the case in all shops, but often in department stores. They will check your purchase and return the tax to you as cash.

Questions?

I hope you found this post was helpful! I love talking about Japan, and there will be many more posts to come. If you're looking for reviews of a particular item, please check my tag cloud for the brand/product type or click Japanese make up. If you have any questions about shopping in Japan or requests regarding these series or a particular product(s), please leave me a comment! I hope you're having a wonderful day and talk to you soon. x

One shadow wonders X 3

Let me tell you, I'm all about make up rituals and high maintenance with my myriad of products, but there are days in one's life when you're extra busy or just can't be bothered with elaborate make up looks. When it comes to quick, busy-day make up application I call one shadow wonders those eyeshadows that make an amazing eye look on their own. I'm cheating a tiny bit as my hooded eyes need a matte contour shade 90% of the time, but it's all optional.

Best taupe eyeshadows

I've not only curated some of my top 3 shades to wear on their own (read: taupes), but also a fantastic performers that won't crease, have fallout or apply patchy. Just a swipe on the lid, add some mascara, blusher and a lip balm - you're ready to take the world .. or just hurry out of the door. Unlike one hit wonders in music, these are eyeshadows I love to reach for time and time again and they certainly never go out of style. If you want to invest on one eyeshadow, consider one of these.

Taupe eyeshadow swatches

Tom Ford Platinum

Most shimmery shadow of the bunch. It has a creamy, almost bouncy gélee texture. I like to use a flat goat hair brush for the application, like Hakuhodo B J004G, and gently swipe on the lid. The brush won't absorb the product, which is great. I'd call Platinium a neutral taupe grey with brown undertones and visible silver flecks. If you prefer a warmer shade, you could try TF's Spice.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Long-lasting Duo Cream shadow

Rouge Bunny Rouge came out with a gorgeous cream eyeshadow duo in the shade Gossammer Wing. I truly hope they will come out with more, as I'm head over heels in love with this one. I must emphasis I'm not a big fan of creamy cream shadows in general, as creasing is my worst nightmare. I'm happy to tell you these dry a satin-matte finish and won't budge, won't crease or move around after setting! Comes with doe foot applicators, but I also like to blending these with my finger.

The lighter shade is a pinky vanilla cream shade: perfect for inner corner or eyeball highlight. The darker shade is a taupe with purple undertones without being overly cool. Looks matte but has a golden sheen to it. Almost like there was golden shimmer trapped underneath the dried cream, giving it a subtle and pretty sheen.

Burberry no. 12 Pale Barley

Loved by bloggers around the globe, Burberry's Pale Barley has a cult status for a reason. This shadow is soft, pigmented and blends like a dream. Can be applied wet for more intensity. To me, Pale Barley is a soft grey-taupe with a hint of creamy beige. Like a chic trench coat or a milky cafe au lait in a eyeshadow. There's silver microshimmer to give the shadow a sheen, but is far from being sparkly.

SUQQU EX-36 Fuyusumire review and swatches

Today I have another item to show you from SUQQU UK's 10th Anniversary Holiday Collection, the beautiful purple eye quad EX-36 Fuyusumire. The collection is designed by the talented make up artist, Jorge Balzaretti. I know the demand was higher than expected for these items, especially eyeshadows, and there were issues with Selfridges website on the launch date and unfortunately not everyone got a hold of them. I'd like to share my own personal ordering experience and of course - swatches and review of the items. Click here to see my photos and review of EX-35 Yukitsubaki, the lipsticks review will also be up soon!

SUQQU UK Holiday 2016 Collection

Ordering process

Back in August when the first press sneak peeks of the collection were released, I placed an email reservation on EX-36 Fuyusumire. I exchanged a couple of emails with SUQQU staff, and ended up reserving the two lipsticks as well. I don't have many lipsticks of this formula and they were just too pretty to miss. Later, due to the high demand, SUQQU announced on Instagram and via an email newsletter that they will have an online reservation for both counters and International mail order. I was unsure if my older reservation was still valid, so on the reservation day I kept refreshing SUQQU UK's website. Unfortunately there was a humane error and the form came online an hour earlier than announced (London time vs GTM), but after 45 minutes the eyeshadows came back online. By my mistake, I took the risk of placing duplicate order despite knowing my reservation could get cancelled, and waited anxiously for reply.

I got my reservation confirmation email within the promised 3 working days, maybe two days before the official launch. The SUQQU staff checked my contact details and told me the launch date might be very hectic, so she called me personally the next day and took my credit card info because I didn't feel safe sharing it online. She even phoned me again to verify my order was a success, card info is now deleted and estimated delivery time. She was very kind, professional and I was so appreciative of the International phone call. I had not mentioned that I was a blogger, I think SUQQU just honoured my early reservation.

SUQQU EX-36 Fuyusumire

Fuyusumire EX-36

Originally the palette was supposed to be a Summer release, but I feel the coolness of the colors and shimmer work well all year around. Since this palette was UK only release, there's no kanji name, but according to SUQQU the translation is a winter violet, which is a small petaled flower growing across hills and and fields. Just like EX-35 Yukitsubaki this palette features 3 mattes and one shimmer shade (upper left corner).

Formula

I think Fuyusumire nails the matte formulation. I was fearing the lilac and purple brown would have the same stiffness I experienced with the darkest matte of EX-32 Rengazome, but Fuyusumire applies effortlessly without skipping on the lid. This is how all high end mattes should perform! The eyeshadows have the perfect balance of softness and firmness, I'd call the feel 'silky' instead of 'buttery'. You get just the right amount of shadow when dipping your brush into the pan.

The pigmentation is like with all SUQQU palettes: sheer-medium, easily to build and layer. The pale mint green is quite pale and sheer though, and doesn't really show up on my lids. I'd assume it would look amazing on tan/medium to dark skin tones, but on my lids you can't see the color. There's no powder kickback, but the pinky glitter shade has some loose sparkle fallout if you don't tap your brush before applying on the lid. In general, any fallout is a no-no to me, but if it can be avoided by simple tapping and I won't have glitter on my face after 8h wear it's good in my book. SUQQU wears nicely ~8h without creasing.

SUQQU EX-36 Fuyusumire swatches

Swatches

- Palest milky mint green, very light and sheer
- Perfect pale lilac
- Dark purple with hints of dark chocolate and dusty mauve
- Icy pink with silver shimmer

SUQQU EX-36 Fuyusumire swatch combinations

Color layering

- Pale mint and purple makes the minty green more opaque
- Dark purple "brown" layered with pale purple turns the shade into deeper shade of purple
- "Brown" and shimmery pink bring out mauves from the darker shade, accompanied by sweet silver shimmers.

SUQQU EX-36 Fuyusumire and EX-35 Yukitsubaki swatches

Yukitsubaki and Fuyusumire comparison

I was requested on IG to compare the two pinks in this collection and figured out I'd show the difference with the "browns" as well. Yukitsubaki's brown is fairly neutral chocolate brown but looks much warmer and red in comparison. Fuyusumire is actually a dark eggplant purple, with again some pinky mauve in the undertones (at least to my eyes).

Yukitsubaki has a golden pink with a peach sheen. Where as Yukitsubaki is a warmer pink with gold shimmer, Fuyusumire is much cooler, icier pink with silver glitters.

SUQQU EX-36 Fuyusumire look

Face of the day

Somewhat traditional look for hooded eyes with dark matte in the crease, lilac all over the lid and pink shimmer on the eyeball as well as in the inner corner. I used the mint green as a base all over the lid, but it's not really visible. Yes, I feel very safe using the colors this way, but the perfectly picked purples make it very fresh, cute and feminine even against my skin tone. I can't wait to try darker, more sultry smokey eyes with this palette! The lipstick is EX-03 Awamomoka from the same collection, worn quite sheer.

Overall impressions

After ordering I sat and wondered if the palette is worth all the hassle and will I be using it as much as I would like. As much as I love SUQQU products there are a couple of palettes I don't reach that often (both have 1 cream shadow). I love the look of purple shadows, but I feel warmer shades compliment my eyes better. After actively playing with the palette I must say I love it. Period. Totally worth of every penny and minute of my time.

I'm smitten with both purple shades and using the shimmer as an accent. I wish the mint green would show up better on my lids, but it does make a perfect cool base for the look. EX-36 Fuyusumire is celebrating the mattes and how they meld together, not as much about complex shimmers or layering. The three mattes make EX-36 Fuyusumire very modern, chic and sophisticated and the pinky glitter shade brings some coy and fun to the palette.

How do you like this palette? Were you able to grab anything from the collection?

NIOD NAAP / Non-Acid Acid Precursor 15% Review

$

After chatting about chemical exfoliants I've been preparing a post with all the current exfoliants I've tried, but meanwhile I'm reviewing the NIOD NAAP or Non-Acid Acid Precursor 15% in a dedicated post. I've never tried any alternative products for acid exfoliants before and I was curious if NAAP would help with my skin concerns in a gentle way without redness or excessive peeling. Thank you Laura at NIOD for sending me this product to try!

NIOD NAAP 15%

Alternative to acid exfoliating?

NIOD NAAP is called a non-acidic alternative to epidermal resurfacing - like AHA, BHA or retinoids. If you're still unfamiliar with AHAs or BHAs I highly recommend you checking out my earlier 101 post! Instead of these acids, NAAP uses fermentation bio-derivatives and amino isolates that should have the benefits of acids without the inflammation, irritation or redness some acids may cause to sensitive skins. This redness does pass, but especially if you're a newbie or very sensitive to acids, you should start with a low dosage and apply only ~every other day. Personally I don't remember having very significant redness issues while using acids, but I have experienced strong tingling from glycolic acid (an AHA) and sometimes my skin does flare up just from my cleansing/skincare routine - which I'd like to avoid. NIOD NAAP retails on their website 42€ for 30ml and has a worldwide delivery.

Packaging and product

NAAP is a semi-opaque white liquid packed in a brown glass bottle with a pipette. The pipette gets all soaked in the product but distributes only little product, so I feel like applying some on my hand by touching the pipette - not good for hygiene. But double dipping the pipette back to the bottle is a nuisance to me. Can I get this in a pump?

NIOD NAAP Swatch

Ingredients

Aqua (Water), Lactococcus Ferment Lysate, Bisabolol, Glycerin, Ethyl Linoleate, Hexanoyl Dipeptide-3 Norleucine Acetate, Myristoyl Nonapeptide-3, Yeast Extract, Soy Amino Acids, Pseudoalteromonas Exopolysaccharides, Lecithin, Sorbitan Isostearate, Isohexadecane, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Polysorbate 60, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Sodium Salicylate, Citric Acid, Sodium Chloride, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Pentylene Glycol, Ethoxydiglycol, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin.

According to COSDNA there is no irritants or acne causing ingredients, the ingredients are listed mostly just as emulsifiers, viscosity controllers with a couple of preservatives. Niod explain some of their technologies on their website: Basically, the 2nd ingredient is a suspension of a probiotic bacteria purified through lysis and acts as a precursor. The amino isolates and oligopeptide are their alternatives for retinoids and AHAs, paired with ingredients to support hydration and make the product more comfortable to use.

Using NAAP

After using NAAP once or twice I noticed my skin flaking. I didn't get any nasty dry patches, but the outermost layer started peeling when applying foundation with a duo-fibre stippling brush. As my skin is overall dry, I need to refrain from using a stippling brush for my foundation for now and stick with softer natural hair bristles. I've had the same experience with a BHA, Benzyl Peroxide and Retinol products, but I expected the NAAP to be more gentle. The instructions do advice you to use the product every other night to build up tolerance, but since there was no stinging, redness or other irritation, I proceeded with using it every evening (vs BHA two times a day). I've used NAAP in my evening routine like this:

1. Double cleansing
2. Vitamin C serum (currently Niod ELAN) + 15 min wait time
3. NAAP + 15 min wait time
4. Retinol serums
5. Hydrating toners and the rest of the routine

NIOD NAAP

My skin concerns and results

I didn't use any chemical exfoliants while I was on Accutane, and after the medication ended I was left with annoying bumps and texture issues on my forehead. I'm happy my break-outs are drastically reduced, but looking at the mirror with uneven skin still bothers me a ton. There's also a couple of stubborn blackheads on the side of my nose that won't go away.

After ~a week of using the NIOD NAAP the texture and my forehead 'bumps' were clearly diminished, which I almost find hard to believe. I had already tried one of my topical acne medications with benzyl peroxide and prescription retin-A, retinol serums, etc., but none seemed to have an effect on the bumpy texture. There hasn't been difference to the stubborn comedones on the side of my nose, I might have to go see a professional about those or just wait a little longer. But overall my skin looks so clear and smooth after using NIOD NAAP. No signs of bumpiness on my forehead and make up applies beautifully. I wish I had taken a before and after pictures, but honestly I was sceptic and didn't expect results so quickly.

The flaking has decreased over time I've used the product, but hasn't completely disappeared. I'd like to add the season is changing to colder and I do also use a gentle retinol serum in the evenings, but I don't think it has lead to over exfoliating. The peeling won't occur if I skip a night using NAAP, but I love the results it gives me. If I need my make up to apply extra beautifully I gently remove the dead skin cells by using my Cure Natural Aqua Gel (reviewed here).

NIOD NAAP

Overall

I'm pretty impressed with the results I've got with NIOD NAAP. I honestly expected the product to be on the more milder side and show only subtle changes over time. For me, the results were quick. If you're not used to medium-strong acids (like BHA 2% or AHA 10%) I recommend you start using every other night or so. NAAP would be a dream product if there was zero flaking, but I doubt the results would be as effective. I'll try to update this post after I'm nearly finished my bottle and tell if did the flaking totally diminish. I'm also thinking of incorporating a bit of BHA into my routine and see if it has any effect on the stubborn comedones as NAAP isn't designed to control acne issues. Considering everything, I love how smooth and radiant my skin has looked lately and I will purchasing a second bottle.

Have you tried any NIOD products? What's your current exfoliant?

What I'm into right now

$
0
0

Last week was a hectic one, I'm sorry I couldn't post as much. It was my birthday week and I had some extra plans accompanied by some additional work and my studies. While I'm working on more comprehensive posts, I thought I'd casually share what I've been into lately. I love watching and reading monthly favorites posts and videos, but don't feel like I accumulate enough new items to do those updates myself. This could be my laid-back version of those, with some life updates.

What I'm Into Right Now

Vitamin C serum

Not a new addition to my routine, but I've been very regular about using a Vitamin C product in my skincare. For more info why you should be using one too, please read my Vitamin C in Skincare 101 post here. This NIOD ELAN is a strong 30% L-Ascorbic Acid*, which I've been using about 3 months. I've used 1/2 this bottle so I presume it'll last me another good 2-3 months. My pigmentation has nicely lightened and my complexion looks even and bright. Proper review will come soon!

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder + Chikuhodo Sakura

When I first started using this powder I found it difficult to detect any difference in my skin. I expected more divided reviews online, but could be the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder won over the hearts of beauty addicts like it did mine. I use shade Diffused Light as a setting/finishing powder with my Chikuhodo x Beautylish Sakura Collection 2015 Powder Brush for a subtle glow. I find my other powder products blend better when there's a light dusting of powder on the top of my foundation. The Sakura powder brush has a nice angled shape and gets easily in every part of the face.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Tinted Luxe Balms

I've been keeping the Pinch of Nude* shade on my table and applied liberally in the mornings while doing my make up or in the evening before going to sleep. I love the instant hydration and plumpness it gives to my lips with a shiny finish. Full review and swatches here.

Luxe botanics Marula Hydrating serum

During the colder windy Winter months the dryness (and ageing, sigh) accentuates my fine lines, which I'm trying to treat and plump with retinols and added hydration. I was gifted the Luxe Botanics Discovery Kit* some time ago and decided to give the Marula Serum a try. This serum-oil instantly treats and nourishes the skin, leaving it plump and supple. I have high hopes of this line and looking forward to purchase the full size.

What I'm Into Right Now

pH Meter

Ever since I battled with acne I've been very into skin health and I'm now working on a blog post about the acid mantle. As a nerdy person I felt the need to test the pH of my cleansers. Stay tuned for more!

Ouai hair oil

This hair oil is both nourishing and gives my hair a nice glow, doubling as a heat protectant. The floral scent is quite intense (love it or hate it) and liberal use of this oil can make my hair look greasy. So far I'm enjoying Ouai products, but haven't totally made up my mind yet.

SUQQU Dual-ended eye liner

I haven't been wearing a catliner for a while, but I like to "stamp" my upper lash line with a sharp liquid liner. This thin line of brown or black makes my eyes look framed and lashes fuller without looking too harsh or intense. The SUQQU liner wears beautifully and you have the option to use either color!

Get Giddy solid hand bar

If you follow me on Instagram, you may know I'm hooked in my climbing hobby. Protective calluses haven't properly formed yet and my hands have been extra sore, rough and even bloody after bouldering sessions. I wanted a climbing salve to treat the hands while keeping them rough. I rub Giddy's har hand bar in evenings and wake up with healthier hands.

I did a little bit of damage to my wallet for my birthday and on Black Friday: some bits and bobs from Cult Beauty, Deciem and Rouge Bunny Rouge. I wasn't planing to purchase much but the latter two had massive savings on selected items. I'll be showing and reviewing those items for you as the parcels roll in. What're you into right now?

Masks in my rotation reviewed

$
0
0

Who doesn't love a good face mask? I'm a fan of quick weekday pampering sessions and I do them regularly instead of saving masking for a special occasion. It takes relatively little time as I can go about my business while the mask dries or treats. I don't think masks are a must-have like a good cleanser or a serum, if you're on a budget I'd invest in just one according to your skin type or concerns.

Masks in my rotation

NIOD Flavanone Mud

NIOD FM claims to work in three phases: purifying surface impurities, decongest and protect against environmental congestion factors for skin health and sustainable purity and glow. This red mud mask tingles on the skin, leaving it firm and supple without being drying. The tingling reduces after multiple uses. I'm quite liking this mask despite its strong smell - full review will follow.

Glamglow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment

I should've read the name more carefully, I just picked up a mini size on a whim from Sephora in Denmark. I am not convinced a product works just because it tingles, but I can take the strong tingling sensation. I liked the mask until it dried up and was time to rinse it off: the exfoliating particles didn't soften up at all and felt quite harsh, like rubbing sandpaper on my skin. After rinsing the mask my face was a bit red, firmer, but not moisturised. I far prefer the NIOD FM mask and think I'm going to pass on Glamglow.

Masks in my rotation

Clarins hydraquench cream mask

Overnight mask or a "sleeping pack" like Asian masks tend to read, Clarins hydraquench is a tricker cream you apply as last step in your evening skincare routine. Most of the cream sinks in but leaves the skin feeling a bit sticky, which I'm not a huge fan of in overnight masks. It's nice and moisturising, sealing all my other skincare products in, but not a necessary step. I'd far prefer a luxurious cream with more anti-ageing ingredients. I'm glad I got the deluxe sample size first.

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask

I purchased this mask after hearing a lot hype about Origins masks, but I'm not totally convinced. Again in a sleeping pack style, I apply it as last step in my evening routine, sealing all the serums and oils inside. With this I don't feel I need a separate moisturiser, but again, I do prefer a heavier night cream that sink in. In the mornings when I wash my face there is a film of sorts on my face. The texture is lighter than Clarins, if I had to pick between the two I'd go for Origins. Not a bad mask, but not interesting enough that I'd repurchase. The scent resembles mango yogurt.

Mask textures

My Beauty Diary Honey Mask

Now this mask is real skin entertainment. Out of all five masks this has the most interesting and fun texture! The mask resembles real liquid honey, has a mild scent and it heats up when you apply it on your face. The mask feels nourishing and moisturising, but not overly so. I think oilier skin types could also enjoy this mask, for me it's not quite moisturising enough I'd repurchase. Fun on cold days or in the sauna.

As you've noticed, I'm more a fan of masking rather than my actual wash-off masks. I use masks to relax and they act as a nice pick-me-up when my skin needs it. With sheet masks I usually get what I've paid for and enjoy them as often as I can.  What's your favorite wash-off mask? Any recommendations?

January Labs Pure & Gentle Cleansing Gel review

$

I've said it once or twice before, but I love a good cleanser. As I wear make up almost every single day, I'm very particular about the way I get it all off and how I treat my skin afterwards. I find cleansers and masks also a a great way to get familiarised with a new brand, as they're usually less of a splurge compared to serums and creams. I was generously sent this cleanser for review from January Labs, and gave it a good test for a couple of months before writing this review.

January Labs Pure & Gentle Cleansing Gel

January Labs Pure & Gentle Cleansing Gel

Currently the Pure & Gentle Cleansing Gel is the only cleanser in January's line. It's designed for all skin types as a 1st cleanse to dissolve dirt, make up and sunscreen without leaving the skin feel stripped. The cleanser retails £23/$32 for 236ml/8 fl. oz on Cult Beauty or January Labs website. £23 is about 26,95€ and got to say it's a very decent price for such a big bottle.

Using the cleanser

The websites recommend multiple uses to the gel: refreshing morning cleanse or removing make up in the evenings - except for eye make up. I've put this cleanser in the use both morning and evening, 1st cleanse (taking of your make up) or 2nd cleanse (cleansing the face), sometimes removing the gel with a hot cloth or just rinsing. The gel is a bit stiff and clumpy when it comes from the bottle but smoothly on damp to wet skin. The gel lathers a bit I wouldn't call it a proper foam. I tend to alternate this product as my 1st and 2nd cleanser, but usually I gravitate towards 2nd just because my face is already damp after emulsifying my oil/balm cleanser. Honestly I think you can do both or even double cleanse with the gel if you're in a pinch. Thanks to its make up melting abilities I find it a bit 'wasteful' to use it as my morning cleanse and I tend to spare it for the evenings.

January Labs Pure & Gentle Cleansing Gel

Ingredients

Water, Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, Disodiumlaureth Sulfosuccinate, Organic Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Ppg-2 Hydroxyethyl Coco/Isostearamide, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Natural Salt, Grape Seed Extract, Vitamin E Acetate, Willow Bark Extract, Rosemary Leaf Extract, Vitamin A Palmitate, Bark Extract, Phospholipids, Sunflower Seed Extract, Licorice Extract, Papaya Fruit Extract, Vitamin C Palmitate, Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate Lauryl Glucoside , Corn Derived Preservative, Sodium Benzoate, Glycerin, Sodium Pca, Lime Oil, Chamomile Extract, Green Tea Leaf Extract, Citric Acid.

The ingredient list is both cleaning agents and botanicals with soothing and brightening properties. I was worried if the gel-to-foam formula contain any skin stripping ingredients like Sodium laureth sulfate, but according to COSDNA there is little to none low acne/irritation causing ingredients. The only warning flags are the Vitamin C Palmitate and Vitamin A Palmitate, which are both forms of antioxidants that have brightening benefits. If you're sensitive, I recommend patch testing, but I don't think the cleanser is on your skin long enough to cause irritation. There is lime oil in the formula, in the case you're sensitive to citrus ingredients. Other notable ingredients are soothing aloe extract, antioxidants like grape seed extract with anti-inflammatory white willow bark and licorice root extracts.

January Labs Pure & Gentle Cleansing Gel

Performance

Researching for this review, I was surprised to read online the cleanser wasn't for removing eye make up and eyes should be avoided. Lesson learned, the cleanser does sting if you open your eyes while washing. Keeping my eyes closed I have had no problem and irritation and I'm tempted to use it all over my face as the cleanser destroys my non-waterproof mascara, eyeliner and other make up effortlessly. I was dubious if a gel texture would suit my dry skin, as I often associate gels for oilier skin types, but the Pure & Gentle Cleansing Gel leaves my skin feeling clean, soft and balanced. No redness, dryness or that notorious 'tight' feeling you could experience with gels or foams. The scent reminds me of papaya and lime (both used ingredients). According to the meter I use, the pH is nicely acidic 5.4 which won't disturb skin's acid mantle and makes it suitable for acne prone skin (like mine).

January Labs Pure & Gentle Cleansing Gel

Overall

January Labs Pure & Gentle Cleansing Gel is a great multipurpose 'workhorse' cleanser for both taking of your make up and washing your face in a gentle, non-irritating way. It's rare to find a cleanser that is both effective yet non-abrasive with a clean ingredient list. The low price point for a high end brand and big packaging size is top notch. This cleanser is something I would certainly take with me on a trip or in my gym bag.

If you've seen my January Labs Revitalizing Day Cream review you'll know I'm smitten with this Californian beauty brand founded by January Olds. I had a moment of panic when I ran out of the cream and had to purchase a new one in an instant. I'm telling you, this is a brand to keep an eye on as the products are very cleanly formulated with science and 'green beauty' hand in hand. The Pure & Gentle Cleansing Gel is something I'll 100% repurchase once I'm finished with the bottle.

Laurantaina Brush Awards 2016

$

I've always admired the Brush Queen of Sweet Make Up Temptations and her brush award posts have been my favorites to read. I feel brushes are more timeless than make up and these type of posts one can refer time and time again. My brush collection is smallish and humble, but I've been wanting to post my own favorites!

Best Make Up Brushes 2016

These categories are completely arbitrary to my own preferences. I gathered the brushes I've reached the most or have left me the biggest impression this year. There are still other beauties I love and adore equally, but these deserve an extra mention. I hope you enjoy!

Koyomo Tsuki Cheek Brush

Best luxury brush

Koyomo Tsuki Cheek brush is one expensive pup, but oh, so divine. Extremely soft saikoho hair with deep red handle coated with aizu urushi lacquer. I love the contrast with white hair, black ferule and deep red handle. For me this brush is a perfect marriage of design, divine user experience and Japanese craftsmanship. The hairs are all white, my brush is just in use and I try avoid washing it too frequently.

Chikuhodo Highlight Brush Z-2

I can't live one day without you brush

Old readers might have guessed this: Chikuhodo Z-2. I have a blog post dedicated to this brush and my favorite finishing powder here. Although Wayne Goss Air Brush is a great challenger for versatile and precise powder application, I've used Z-2 the most. Soft and tapered tip has more body than the WG, which I enjoy.

Tom Ford Eyeshadow Blend Brush 13

The perfect eye blender brush

When my friend recommended this brush I was dubious, thinking it would be the same as Hakuhodo's J142. If you don't want to splurge on TF, is J142 a good option, but Tom Ford Eye Blender Brush 13 is denser, fuller, less tapered has more body to it. I can't resist sexy the gold and black combination and I love the long length and perfect weight of the brush. You wouldn't guess how pleasant using a brush can be before you find the optimal handle weight for you. I will never part with this brush.

Houkudou G-S1

Eyeshadow laydown brush

My essential brush every morning. I prime my eyelids with an eyeshadow primer and a nude powder shadow 99% time I do my make up, so an effective brush for a quick laying down the base color is an essential. My go-to brush has been the Houkudou gold & black series brush G-S1. Made of Canadian squirrel hair, it's larger and feels softer than Chikuhodo G-03, my old favorite for the same purpose.

Hakuhodo J110 Cheek Brush

Blush brush of the year

Hakuhodo J110. Now, she's not a new acquisition whatsoever, but I find my hand reaching for this blush brush more than frequently. Although I love my round pom-pom shaped blush brushes, softness of squirrel hair and the flexibility of Kyureido or SUQQU, the Hakuhodo J110 is a true multitasker. Dab, swirl or buff - this brush has got your back with both medium and sheer pigmentation blushes. The handle sits perfectly into my hand, I love the length of the hair as well.

Surratt Contour Brush

Contour brush of the year

Now, I dislike it when people online say you "need" an item. Nobody needs make up or brushes, but with the lack of better verbalisation I'd want to say: if you contour your cheeks you need this brush. It's soft but not ultra soft, has the perfect density and strength for applying and blending any harsh contour lines. The angled shape fits under jaw line or cheek bones beautifully. The experience won't get much better than this. If you have been umming and ahing between the RMK (harder) and Chikuhodo (slimmer) contour brushes I say go for Surratt.

Koyudo Factory Brush

Best discovery

When I was in the Koyudo factory store I found an unfamiliar looking bunch of brushes in a jar, made of squirrel hair and priced very reasonably. I don't know other purpose of this brush, except it was limited to the factory store. Maybe a prototype of sorts? The long hairs make this brush feel ultra soft and it diffuses color beautifully. I'm very glad I picked this one up as it's a beautiful brush and brings me back lovely memories from my Kumano trip.

Koyomo Hana Gradation Set

The Set of the year

This could have been the Chikuhodo Lumière set from last year, but the award has to go to Koyomo Hana Gradation set. Ultra soft goat hair, super cute and efficient. One of the best priced fude sets out there. Personally I love pink and using these brushes with tulip shaped handles make me happy every time. Here are more pictures and my full review.

Chikuhodo Lumière face brush

Facegasm brush

I don't have many humongous face brushes, but Chikuhodo Lumière needs to be mentioned here. I love the whole Lumière holiday set, but the powder brush with super long hair is like a huge kitten's paw caressing your face. It has a nice amount of density and width for applying finishing powder. The golden handle is simply beautiful and the glitter stars haven't come off at all.

Hakuhodo S194 brush and Hakuhodo B015 brush

Unsung heroes

Hakuhodo spoolie S194 and B015 eyebrow brushes are something I reach for every day and simply can't live without. I remember when I asked the SA at Hakuhodo Aoyama store for their best eyebrow brush and without thinking she handed me B015. She was right. B015 is small but not tiny, very precise and comfortable for drawing eyebrows with a powder. Long time I used a disposable mascara wands to comb my brow hairs. Although it works, I would never go back - not after trying a proper quality spoolie like Hakuhodo S194. They're both small investments you'll use and enjoy every day.

Tanseido brushes

Brand discovery

Now this is a tough one, were getting to the 'selecting your favorite child' territory, as I tried Koyomo, Kyureido, Tanseido and Shaquda first time this year. I deeply adore all of these brands, and if I had to choose, I'd go for Shaquda's handles, Koyomo's goat hair, Tanseido's brush shapes and Kyureido's softness. In the end, I think I'd have to pick Tanseido although I love the other brands equally. Insane softness, long handles and interesting shapes just stole my heart completely. Read more about my Tanseido face brushes in this post.

2016 Best Brush Roll by Sarah

The Most beautiful brush roll

I was presented the most gorgeous brush roll hand-made by the lovely Sarah aka 212kiki. She has recycled old kimonos for the outer fabric and lined the inside is with a dirt-resistant material that can be wiped clean. Perfectly sewn, practical and beautiful. This is certainly one the most unique and thoughtful gifts a brush nut can receive! Sarah is also a Brush Goddess with a divine collection, make sure to check her Instagram account!

I hope you're having a wonderful day and talk to you soon. x
